Why did you choose that region of the world?

Participating in an international learning experience and working overseas through an international Co-op placement has allowed me to travel while completing my degree. The group study program in China offered through UBC’s Go Global program was a great way to experience the country while earning credits towards my degree. I felt that I would learn more about China (who is one of Canada’s largest trading partners for forest products and a country that is facing several environmental issues) by visiting the country instead of solely attending lectures here at UBC.

I feel that the program enhanced my degree. I was able to study forestry and conservation from a very different perspective and was able to visit many manufacturing facilities.

What was the highlight of your exchange?

The group study program was a great learning experience. I feel that the program enhanced my degree. I was able to study forestry and conservation from a very different perspective and was able to visit many manufacturing facilities. Apart from the academic portion of the trip, I gained a greater awareness of the Chinese culture and made many new friends along the way. After being immersed in the Chinese way of life, I have a greater appreciation for our standard of living in Canada.

Future Plans

I am working towards a career in the sustainable building industry. With my background in wood manufacturing, I would like to work with wood as a primary building material. Upon graduation, I may pursue a Master of Building Science, as there will be an increasing demand for improving the energy-efficiency of our buildings. I will continue to travel to new countries and look forward to returning to Asia!
