Why did you choose the TRANSFOR Masters program?

I was more interested in the international exposure and interdisciplinary work than typical research-based masters. I wanted to travel after my bachelors and this programme allowed me to move abroad while continuing my studies. Learning abroad is only as useful as what you can bring back with you.

Academic Highlight

The TRANSFOR Master’s program offers two field courses throughout the program. The two August field courses were absolutely all time! In Sweden the school system is different than in Canada; you only take one course at a time, with 1-2 weeks of hands-on field work (often in another country). Yay more travelling! Learning abroad is only as useful as what you can bring back with you. My thesis is a dream for me: I’m working on incorporating some of the more involved management practices from Sweden in a 30 year thinning plan for the Alex Fraser Research Forest in British Columbia.

Memorable International Experience

Everything about my year abroad was amazing!!! Student life is great. Old European schools like SLU have so many old traditions that are really goofy but super fun. I really liked the small campus and all the friends I met (you really do know everybody!). I even joined a choir! I NEVER would have done THAT in Vancouver!

Future Aspirations

One day I will sail around the world! I’m still not sure how my education will help, maybe I’ll build a wooden boat? I will do my best to return to Sweden to live and work. I really hope I can find a job (in Sweden) but if all else fails I can always do a PhD! (I’m hoping I don’t need to resort to that!)
